Tongabezi Trust School

The Tongabezi Trust School or Tujatane was set up in Simonga Village by the owners of Tongabezi Lodge in 1996 to provide underprivileged and vulnerable rural children, living within walking distance of the school, with a holistic education for a better quality of life. Tujatane has grown from a small pre-school class of 15 children to a primary school with over 240 students between the ages of three and 17 years.

The Foundation supports the Tongabezi Trust School in realizing its vision to develop each child as a whole, providing them with a wide range of extra-curricular activities, life skills and values building, and academics. In this way, they are empowered to make informed choices for bright and promising futures both for themselves and the lives of those around them.

The food programme at the Tongabezi Trust School ensures that each student receives a nutritious breakfast and lunch every school day. Not only does this keep the children fully fueled for interactive learning, it also takes pressure off their parents and guardians.  The vision and ethos of Tujatane reaches beyond the primary school. The Tongabezi Trust School also supports over 60 children who have moved onto secondary schools all over Zambia as well as several students completing diplomas and degrees all over the world. Students have gone on to become everything from accountants to engineers, lawyers to clinical officers, pilots to teachers.

Tujatane means ‘Let us all hold hands together’ in the local language of Chitonga. And, from community engagement to hands-on involvement by Tongabezi guests and international funding, we have seen this lived out throughout the years and in all aspects of the school. In fact, apart from the first classroom, which Tongabezi built, the development of the school has been made possible through the generous sponsorship of donors all over the world.
