Human Elephant Coexistence

In 2022, Green Safaris Conservation Foundation and By Life Connected began working with the communities of Simoonga and Sinde using the ABCD approach (Asset-Based Community Development). Following a baseline survey and regular community meetings, a core group of local members developed a plan focused on sustainable development and conflict mitigation.

One of the area’s greatest challenges is Human-Elephant Conflict (HEC). Subsistence farming, essential for many rural communities, is nearly impossible here due to elephants frequently raiding crops. As a result, communities have turned to charcoal production and illegal logging, accelerating deforestation and environmental degradation.
To address these interconnected issues, the core group launched a Sustainable Organic Agriculture Initiative paired with Community-Based Conflict Mitigation. In 2024, key infrastructure was established at a central demonstration farm, including a borehole, irrigation system, tank stand, and a security house built using earthbags. The site is now fully fenced, and vegetable planting has begun, with further training planned for the farm foreman.

A major component of the conflict strategy is a Nature-Based Beekeeping Initiative. 35 beehives have been built and will form a beehive fence – a proven, non-lethal method to deter elephants, who avoid bees. A bamboo bio-fence is also being developed to reinforce the boundary.
This initiative will integrate expert knowledge in beekeeping and sustainable honey production with indigenous knowledge and local techniques in order to ensure locally-led adaptation and improved livelihoods
