Hope Community Garden

The Community Garden aims to provide fresh organic local produce as well as chicken and eggs for both the local community and Kaya Mawa Lodge (from farm to table). The initiative has created employment and encourages organic agriculture and chemical free farming.

The Community Garden on Likoma Island was initiated to provide the community with regular access to fresh, local produce, chicken and eggs. The project not only supports food for the local community, but also promotes organic, sustainable farming methods that are gentle on the environment.
The focus is on building the soil quality, making compost, planting cover crop, mulching, collecting baobab fibers from fallen trees and harvesting manure with compost latrines, creating strong soil foundations for the garden to thrive. The team continues with further education on farm management principles and working with the environment.

As part of the Foundation’s broader commitment to food sustainability, the garden now also contributes to projects like the “From Farm to Table” recipe book, which celebrates local ingredients and cooking traditions. Proceeds from the book help fund community development projects like this one – creating a cycle of support that’s rooted in local knowledge and shared benefit.
